Over 70 members of the Red Deer community gathered June 29 at the Golden Circle to hear Mayor Tara Veer present issues and developments that the City is addressing as they pertain to the economy, the impact on social services sector and the well-being of citizens.  Shared highlights include:

Recent accomplishments

  • No increase in Transit & Recreation fees this fiscal year
  • Rip ‘n Rec Summer Pass is an affordable, summer transit and recreation pass for youth
  • Free amenities such as Discovery Canyon, Spray Park, Bower Ponds
  • Waskasoo Park trails

Priorities

  • Social policy framework
  • 2019 Canada Winter Games legacy projects and programs
  • Ongoing housing projects – Mayor Veer indicated this is one of the most strategic projects currently underway

Future focus:

  • North side recreation centre
  • Community centre in Inglewood
  • Continue to provide amenities, programs and affordable services

Some of the questions from the audience were focused on a local treatment program for those struggling with addictions, ridership on City buses and advocacy for the development of a poverty reduction strategy. CAPRA representatives were pleased with the attendance and response to this session and look forward to continuing the conversation in order keep local issues in the forefront.
